Community Library of Li Village River Park, Qingdao

Situated on the southern bank of the Li Village River in Qingdao, a coastal city in northeastern China, the community library is a compact complex designed with simple geometric volumes. It houses various facilities, including a reading room, reception hall, observation tower, and public restrooms, while also featuring a circulation system that links different levels of the park. The design draws inspiration from the "folie" concept of Parc de la Villette, a modern approach to creating small landscape structures that allows for greater flexibility in form. The architectural game of volumes offers a dramatic experience as visitors navigate the park in the horizontal and vertical direction. The cubic pavilion, constructed from a steel framework and clad in white aluminum, creates a three-story space. Circulation elements are highlighted in red, connecting the observation level at the top, the mid-level city road, and the lower level by the river park. The reading room, characterized by its wavy façade at the lower level, blends seamlessly with the park's greenery, fostering a peaceful and natural environment for readers. In the context of the surrounding community, which is a typical Chinese suburb, the library provides a unique experience and perspective on themes of order and chaos, freedom and constraints.
