Sous le ciel noir nous voyons clair
La lampe est pleine de nos yeux
Nous habitons notre vallée
Nos murs nos fleurs notre soleil
Nos couleurs et notre lumière
La capitale du soleil
Est à l’image de nous-même
Et dans l’asile de nos murs
Notre porte est celle des hommes

Garden design is a process of becoming, evolving into an arrangement that connects with the world. Drawing from the theory of French philosopher Gilles Deleuze, the concept of "becoming-garden" is likened to a rhizome. It deterritorializes the traditional garden and reterritorializes it upon encountering the residential systems of modern architecture, charting its own path along the line of flight to form a new rhizome. This artistic creation, characterized by its rhizomatic nature, does not simply take root but instead accelerates along an abstract line, radiating microscopic particles and becoming molecular artistic arrangements that embody a nomadic spirit. The new creations are both rhizomatic and nomadic, dismantling the connections between layers and roots, and allowing for free expression along the line of flight. Imitation and pedigree are seen as clumsy and boring; without roots, there are no clear beginnings or endings. Rhizome-nomads create their own paths, existing as molecular entities in a state of becoming.
Main Garden
In the summer of 2016, we designed One Mu Garden in Suzhou (one mu = 666.67m2). The chosen site is inward-focused, as we aimed to develop a garden-residence where the internal ambiance takes precedence over the external surroundings.

The site plan illustrates buildings arranged around the perimeter, with gardens at the center. The entrance is situated on the south side with a vegetable yard to the left and a garage to the right. Upon entering, a path appears between two walls, reminiscent of the rosebushes found in the classic Yipu garden. After a turn, we encounter a moon gate that offers a glimpse of the main garden's landscape. To access the garden, we need to first go indoors on the west side, passing through the entrance hall before reaching the main salon.
A polyline-shaped corridor-bridge spans the central area, dividing it into two sections: the main garden to the south, which serves as a public space, and the more private inner garden to the north. The main garden is more open, with an atelier on the east side facing the main salon to the west, while the inner garden expands in a winding manner towards the northeast. The garden's water inspired by Liu Garden, begins at the moon gate at the southernmost point of the main garden, flows beneath the corridor-bridge, meanders inward, and ultimately disappears into a courtyard in the northeast.

Water-Courtyard
These corridors create intriguing pathways for strolling, and a series of courtyards are arranged sequentially, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces while gradually enhancing privacy. Each room among these courtyards offers a unique view, contributing to its own distinct atmosphere. The northwestern and southeastern sections of the buildings are designed as two-story structures, adding a three-dimensional quality to this modern garden-villa with terraces and upper-floor rooms featuring courtyards.
The project site is situated in a villa district in the southern suburbs of Suzhou. The client aimed to demolish the old house and construct a modern garden-villa. Most villa districts exhibit a figure-ground relationship, where the house is positioned at the center, enclosed by boundary walls, resulting in a monotonous area. The house is merely a volume containing its interior, and the yard is just an open space without any spatial permeation between the interior and exterior.
Our design strategies begin by dividing the entire structure into four two-story volumes, creating a central courtyard. Corridors are then positioned along the boundary walls, and pavilions are placed at key junctions as needed. This arrangement forms a main garden in the southeast area of the site, situated between the main building and the corridors. Visitors enter the villa through the northeast entrance, walking along the corridors, passing through the main garden, and arriving at the central courtyard. Alternatively, they can first turn west, enter the central courtyard, and then visit the main garden in the southeast. The interplay between the inner and outer spaces creates an engaging promenade experience and a profound sense of layering. The transparent façade of the main salon in the southern volume intensify visually the permeation between inner and outer spaces.
Entrance Corridor
Central Courtyard
Another crucial aspect is leveraging the vertical layout of the villa, which consists of two floors and a basement, to create a three-dimensional garden. A series of courtyards and terraces are strategically placed on the second floor, designed to make occupants lose awareness of the floor they are on. Additionally, an "L"-shaped swimming pool, a sunken courtyard, and a duplex space are incorporated, further blurring the sense of being on the basement level. This design approach effectively fuzzifies the concept of "floor," creating the illusion of infinite spatial experiences within the confines of the building.
03 SK Villa(方案 Conceptual Project)
In the fall of 2019, we were commissioned to redesign a 4000m2 old industrial site that included several derelict workshop buildings and warehouses. The owner envisioned constructing a modern garden-villa. The new structure was intended to function as a hotel with approximately 20 rooms, while also accommodating a vacation villa for the owner's family. We decided with the owner to incorporate additional public spaces to transform the project into a cultural and tourist hub that could attract visitors beyond just hotel guests.
The location is bordered by a river to the north, a town road to the west, and an orchard-field to the east. To the south, a tall wall is required to block the neighboring industrial site. The main entrance is located on the north side, featuring a bridge that spans the river, reminiscent of the Canglang Pavilion Garden. Adjacent to the entrance is a linear glass volume that extends over the river, creating a light and transparent appearance. Visitors can sit and enjoy tea there while taking in the views that permeates mutually between the garden and the river. Additionally, the riverbank serves as a public space for local residents. Retail and displaying areas are situated along the street on the west side.
The garden is divided into two sections: a water garden and a gravel courtyard. The courtyard is encircled by the tearoom, displaying area, and a canteen that can accommodate events, creating a neat glass facade that overlooks the courtyard. The guest rooms on the second and third floors retreat slightly to ensure privacy.
The water garden features an irregular border, creating diverse surrounding facades similar to the Master of the Nets Garden. The pathways and corridors that encircle the water offer a sense of strolling, relaxation, and observation. A pavilion is situated where two corridors meet, appearing to float gently above the water and concealing the villa located to the north. The first floor of the eastern section houses a small art gallery, which also serves as a craft workshop, with a glass facade that brings in the landscape of the orchard-field to the east of the site, adding visual depth to the entire garden. Eight guest rooms are set on the second and third floors, providing views of the orchard-field.
Transformation of Sourper & Panda – Groupe Office Building (Under Construction)
The design scope of this project encompasses the 5th and 6th floors, as well as the roof, of a six-story office building located in Qingpu, Shanghai. The main design goal is to create spatial interaction between the two floors and the roof, which currently lack a vertical connection. Our approach involves removing a section of the 6th floor slab and a portion of the adjacent roof to create a double-height hall and a courtyard on the 6th floor. This modification establishes a vertical link between the 5th floor, 6th floor, and the roof, which is intended to be a garden. The courtyard on the 6th floor offers views that can be enjoyed from the hall on the 5th floor, as well as from the corridor and meeting room on the 6th floor.
The roof garden serves as the focal point of this project. Our aim is to create a garden that transcends everyday life atop this building. It will provide an aesthetic surprise for the entire corporate campus while catering to the relaxation needs of company executives.
The roof area is divided into two sections by a courtyard. In each section, we have installed a triangular pavilion constructed from a steel framework, which appears to float gently above the gravel floor. A polyline walkway connects the two pavilions.
White planting boxes are arranged around the edges of the roof, with planting belts creating a separation between the garden's artistic ambiance and the outside world. Triangular stainless-steel planting boxes are interspersed in the center, featuring small trees and shrubs that seem to float within the garden.
Pudong Villa, Shanghai (Built)
As a project of self-built villa in the outskirts of Shanghai, our goal is to establish a garden-atmosphere within certain constraints. Delicate permeation and integration are formed between the indoor and outdoor areas of the villa by inserting courtyards on various levels and interspersing greenery throughout. The striking white volume serves as a container, containing multiple courtyards, forming stable internal ambience centered around these courtyards, allowing us to realize the artistic conception we pursue.
From One Mu Garden to Pudong Villa, these projects represent a continuous process of creation and practice that is both rhizomatic and nomadic. In various contexts and conditions, we consistently deterritorialize traditional garden concepts and reterritorialize them when interacting with different elements of the modern system. Each time the lines of flight cannot be predicted, leading to diverse outcomes. Attempting to trace our origins is futile, making our creative process akin to drawing an uncertain map to perform a garden nomad.
